I finally found the time to take out and examine the EPROM chips from the WQESD and WQSMD controllers from Webster Computer Corporation.

The chips hold the code for the WOMBAT diagonstics software resident on these controllers. WOMBAT stands for Webster Omnipotent Mass Builder and Tester, and is used for 'formatting, testing and maintaining the drive and controller subsystem'.

Examining the WOMBAT code (WQESD, WOMBAT version 1583Z2.5A, a 27512 EPROM chip) I found the interesting following quote:
